Hydrogen Projects in Africa
In our last post, we considered the potential of developing hydrogen valleys in Africa and listed the countries with existing or ongoing hydrogen projects. This post presents some hydrogen projects in Mauritania, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, Namibia, South Africa, and Angola.
The potential benefits of building hydrogen projects in Africa cannot be over-emphasized. Ranging from economic benefits to decarbonization, the value chain of hydrogen in Africa can transform its energy sectors and help in meeting its national energy needs and becoming a key player in the global energy market.
Figures 1 through 9 below illustrate the projects’ details in a clear and succinct manner. The project name, location, developer, development strategy, timeline, cost, and capacity are all specified. Also, to serve as a possible blueprint for replication in other regions, the production potential, decarbonization potential, and social impact of each project are highlighted.

Conclusion
It is worth noting that some of these projects are funded locally by the government or in partnership with international bodies. For instance, the project in Mauritania is funded by the government in agreement with Werner Hoyer, President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) while that of Egypt is funded by the European Bank for Construction and Development (EBRD).
As Africa continues to increase investment in hydrogen projects, especially in developing hydrogen valleys, the technology would become a viable solution and serve as a catalyst to expand its hydrogen market.
